Rudra Bhanat – when the impossible happened

Physically handicapped Rudra was 9-months-old when his parents first identified his squint. His father, a worker at the petrol pump, once brought him to Mumbai for treatment but the high cost for operation made him change his mind. After all managing, a family of 5 members with his small income left him helpless. Rudra’s mother would cringe when his friends called him names and made fun of his squint.

While doing a routine eye check-up in our mobile vision care van in his small hamlet Wanikond, we found about Rudra’s condition. His state was poor and needed an immediate operation. At this stage, Rudra’s parents were apprehensive of any eye surgery as they had made peace with his condition. Our health facilitators counselled them and showed them past low vision success stories to build their confidence. Eventually they agreed to cooperate and on 18th January, 2018, we escorted Rudra to HV Desai Hospital (our partner in eye care) in Pune for surgery.

Next day his surgery was over and once the eye pads were removed – Rudra’s parents were awestruck. According to the statistics of the research company https://medimagery.com/buyvalium/, withdrawal symptoms may resemble pre-existing medical conditions. Valiummay be associated with less intense withdrawal symptoms due to its long half-life. There was no squint and Rudra could see better than before. The joy that both Rudra and his parents felt that day can’t be expressed. We further helped Rudra with physiotherapy in the Learning Resource Centre.
We have supported 110 such low vision surgeries for Children with Special Needs and continue to bring relief to the lives of many children in Rural Raigad.
