Ronnie Screwvala: Founder Trustee

Ronnie ScrewvalaRonnie Screwvala is a first generation entrepreneur who started his journey by introducing India to multi channel TV viewing, by launching the first cable TV network in the country. From there, he went on to build a Media and Entertainment conglomerate spanning Television, Motion Pictures, Broadcasting, Games and Digital, that he listed in 2005 for a market cap of $ 55 million and that The Walt Disney Company bought in 2012 for an enterprise value of $1.4 billion.

Ronnie puts a great deal of emphasis on Social Welfare. He founded a Foundation with a focus on Rural India and adopted over 200 villages in Maharashtra to work on their self-sufficiency in water, health, education and livelihood.

Onto his second innings after selling his stake to Disney - The Foundation - entitled SWADES, has a plan to impact one million in Rural Maharashtra in five years, with a clear exit/empowerment strategy from those villages, and building a model for others to follow. The Foundation has committed an initial amount of $50 million in its first tranche.

Zarina Screwvala: Founder & Managing Trustee, Swades Foundation

Zarina ScrewvalaZarina is the Founder Trustee of the Swades Foundation & works full time as its Managing Trustee. Zarina has featured in Business Today’s Most Powerful Women in Indian Business List for three years. She is on the advisory board of the Asia Society India, St Xavier’s College and W.I.F.T. India (Women In Film and Television).

Zarina Screwvala is recognized as a game changer in Indian Media and Entertainment. Zarina is one of the three founder directors of UTV, one of India’s foremost Media & Entertainment Conglomerates; now Disney UTV. Zarina has lead the creation and launch of highly successful broadcast brands including Hungama TV - India’s First Local Kids Channel which in 18 months became the #1 Kids channel in India as well as other leading channels including Bindaas, UTV Stars, and UTV Action. She also created and launched Astro Ceria - the first Local kid’s channels in Indonesia & Malaysia. Prior to that Zarina was a multi award winning Producer of over 3500 hours of highly rated television programming in multiple languages for every major Indian broadcaster.

Mangesh Wange: Chief Operating Officer

Mangesh WangeMangesh has more than 27 years of General Management experience with P&L responsibility and in leading successful start-ups across multiple sectors and various organizations viz. Farm Inputs (Farm Machinery, Agri-Inputs, Animal Feeds & Micro Information), Retail and Micro Finance. Mangesh has rich experience in strategy formulation & implementation and worked for organic & inorganic growth of businesses.

Mangesh started his career in Sales & Distribution with Mahindra Tractors in 1987. He also headed the S&D of Agri Input Business at Godrej Agrovet. He conceptualized and started the modern retail businesses (Aadhaar and Nature’s Basket) at Godrej Agrovet Ltd. He has also worked in the Microfinance business at Fullerton India and later for Reuters Market Light at Thomson Reuters.

Before joining Swades, Mangesh was the Head, Animal Feeds Business at Godrej Agrovet Limited.

Chandra Shekhar Gowda: Director – Economic Development

Chandra Shekhar GowdaChandra Shekhar Gowda is an international social development specialist with over 17 years of experiences in public health, child rights, social protection, women’s empowerment and private sector engagement.

He specializes in Implementation Science, managing large and specialized projects across India. He has headed Asia’s largest and most comprehensive community empowerment programmes among women in sex work that brought down prevalence of HIV from 22 percent in 2005 to 9.1 percent in 2012). Prior to joining Swades, he has been part of several international assignments providing technical support to national governments, bilateral and multilateral organisations as well as international NGOs. He has been instrumental in conceptualization and implementation of ideas that resulted in creation of new knowledge. He has worked in rural parts of Karnataka implementing comprehensive health intervention covering over 220 villages.

Some of his notable work includes recognition from the Indian Psychiatric Society, Karnataka Chapter for commendable work in working with HIV and Alcohol issues. Stigma Reduction Strategies won the development market grant for being innovative and also was adjudged one of the best practices that featured as case study in World Bank Website. Setting up of integrated community water plant in rural areas in partnership with communities and Gram Panchayat that led to scaling of model in other villages serving over 4000 families.

He has contributed to mobilizing resource that includes scanning for opportunities, assessing the fit, putting together partnerships and writing proposals. He was instrumental in securing grant from Development Market Place, UNDP/ICRW and was part of writing proposal to European Union, GFATM, Global Fund for women, UNEDF, UNDP, UNICEF and Corporate Foundations

A member of ‘Abolition of child prostitution’ Government of Karnataka, he believes in community empowerment and integrated approaches that contributes towards sustainable development.

Dr. Natasha Mehta: Director – Health & Education

Natasha MehtaDr. Natasha Mehta has been in the field of education for the last 23 years. The early years of her career were spent teaching in residential schools in the north of India. She was the Head of Curriculum Development at the Lawrence School, Sanawar, one of the oldest residential schools in Asia. Natasha has been a curriculum development consultant for Euroschools in the early years of their inception.

She has authored about 52 books and has been an author with Pearson Longman since the last fourteen years. Natasha is the founder Principal of the first and flagship school of EurSchool in Navi Mumbai and Group Principal of the network of EuroSchools across India, driving innovation as a thought leader and subsequently designing strategy, supported by setting of principles and standards for implementation across the network, especially in areas of best teaching practices and academic leadership mentoring. She was Leader, Strategy and Innovation at EuroSchools until recently. Natasha has also been a teacher educator.

She is passionate about innovative practices in education, teacher training, leadership mentoring, blended learning and inclusive education. Her heartfelt desire is to work towards learning that is long-term, interdisciplinary, student-centered, and integrated with real world issues and practices, to provide opportunities for excellence in education across the various socio-economic strata.

She holds Masters degrees in Zoology and English and a PhD in Education Psychology.

Rahul Katariya: Director – HR & Administration

Rahul KatariyaRahul comes in with a rich experience of 18 years which is an amalgamation of various functions like Training, Marketing, Operations and he started his HR journey in April 2007 with EXL.

He has a proven track record as HR Generalist profile which includes People Management, Performance Appraisal, Manpower Planning, Recruitment, MIS, Training and Development, etc. among other things. His expertise lies in partnering with Business units to develop overall business strategy and objectives and translating them into goals, plans and tactics.

He has completed his B.Com and MBA in Marketing from Pune University and has completed his PGCHRM from XLRI. Before joining Swades, Rahul was associated with MNCs like GE, EXL, WNS, Stream Global Services where he was the Director HR. Post Stream got acquired by Convergys in 2014, he was responsible for the HR Generalist profile for the West region in capacity of a Regional HR Business Partner, managing around 4500 employees based out of Mumbai, Thane and Pune.

Rajesh Jain: Director – Govt Partnerships

Rajesh JainMr Rajesh Jain has a M.Sc degree in Applied Geology from IIT Roorkee and more than two decades experience in companies like ACCESS Development Services, Dte. of Petroleum, Govt of Rajasthan, Indian Institute of Craft & Designs, Rural Non- Farm Development Agency & Dept of Mines & Geology, Govt of Rajasthan. His expertise includes in conceptualization, implementation, monitoring of livelihood projects in rural areas and has also supported craft based livelihoods intervention in 7 tribal clusters of India being supported by Govt of India. He was also associated with Ode to earth, a craft based marketing initative at National Level and is a Member of the livelihoods Advisory Committee of the IFAD funded Mpower project in West Rajasthan. In his last assignment at ACCESS as Vice President, he was involved in Tourism and Rural Business Hub projects with leading foundations like Dell, RBS, HSBC, CITI, ICICI, IL&FS and World Bank.

Subodh Yadav: Director – Economic Development

Subodh YadavSubodh brings with him a decade of experience in agriculture and dairy in large corporate setups along with a strong foundation in policy formulation and business planning. He has been a member of Indian Angel Network mentoring young entrepreneurs in rolling out technology oriented businesses.

Before joining Swades, Subodh was working with Business Advisory Services in Ernst & Young wherein he advised various State Governments and Central Government as a key member of Skill Development, Livelihoods and Agricultural Advisory Practice (“Social Infrastructure Vertical”). He conceptualized and facilitated rollout of many key development projects in India in Ernst & Young including managing one of the largest social impact bond programme (employment-linked skill development) implemented in an innovative public private partnership mode (a $ 1 billion programme targeting up-skilling of 2 million youths in Uttar Pradesh over a 5 year period). He played a key role in mobilization of over 4.5 million youths in the state over a six month duration through leveraging a technology enabled platform and the state administrative machinery and using innovative incentive structure and behavioural strategies. Subodh has also been instrumental in formulating an inclusive development approach for India’s first greenfield smart city “Naya Raipur”.

Subodh has also worked in NDDB Dairy Services (a wholly owned subsidiary of National Dairy Development Board). As an Associate in Managing Director’s Office, Subodh played a key role in supporting implementation of $4 billion National Dairy Plan. He facilitated formation of two of the largest Producer Companies in India with a cumulative turnover of $200 million mobilizing over 100,000 farmers in Gujarat and Rajasthan in two years.

Subodh has done his Bachelors of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Roorkee and has completed his Masters in Business Administration from IIM Lucknow. He brings fresh perspectives in technology, innovation and behavioural science, which he hopes to apply in rural India in agriculture, dairy and livelihoods.

Tushar Sud: Director – Fund Raising, Resource Mobilisation and Corporate Communications

Tushar SudTushar has over 12 years’ experience in Strategic Consulting, Client and Relationship Management, Sales Management and Business Development. Prior to joining Swades, he has been associated with organizations like DASRA as Director Strategic Philanthropy Development & Wealth Partnership; with Deutsche Bank as VP Corporate Development; with Royal Bank of Scotland as Head of Sales Management; with JP Morgan as Strategic Planner; with Evalueserve as Lead, Strategic Consulting and Business Research and with IndusInd Bank as Manager Wealth Management.

Tushar is an MBA in International Business from IIFT, Delhi and Masters in Finance & Control.

Poonam Jethwani: Director – Finance

Poonam JethwaniPoonam Jethwani comes with 15 years of experience in handling positions of high responsibility in the Finance department in companies like United Health Group, Neoteric Infomatique Ltd., Otis Elevators Co. Ltd & Priya Group. Prior to joining us Poonam has been practicing as an independent financial consultant for multiple organizations.

A qualified Chartered Accountant & Company Secretary, Poonam is currently pursuing a Certification course in IFRS & Masters in Business Finance, both conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
At the Swades foundation, Poonam is also responsible for implementing systems and processes, together with overseeing the entire finance and regulatory function.

Ravindra Mishra: Director – WATSAN

Ravindra MishraMr. Mishra has more than 20 years of professional experience with expertise in water resources management, soil and water conservation, drought mitigation, ground water recharging, water storage, drinking water and sanitation, etc. He was working with Reliance Foundation in various projects for the transformation of Rural Livelihood with sustainable technologies like rain water harvesting structures and construction of earthen dam resulting in water conservation. Prior to Reliance Foundation he was working with Action for Food Production as Sr. Hydrologist where he worked on various projects for the implementation of water resources, land reclamation etc. Mr. Mishra is an M.Tech in Agricultural Engineering with specialization in soil and water engineering.

Bejoy Davis Chiramel: Deputy Director – WATSAN

Bejoy Davis ChiramelBejoy has over 19 years of experience in Projects & Maintenance, Project Procurement, Managing Construction, renovations and Vendor Management. He has been associated with organizations like Blue Sky Luxury Apartments Pvt. ltd. as Construction Project Manager(Srilanka), with Nilgai Foods Pvt. Ltd. as Head of projects & maintenance (Mumbai), with Ka- Restaurants as AVP Projects and Maintenance, with Mirah Group as AGM Projects and Maintenance, with YUVA(NGO) as GM.

Bejoy has done B.E. (CIVIL) from Mumbai University.

Mahesh Doddamane: Deputy Director – Health & Nutrition.

Mahesh DoddamaneMahesh Doddamane comes in with a rich experience of over two decade in the field of development especially in Public Health (nutrition, mother and child health, HIV/AIDS), livelihoods, enterprise development, income generation, micro credit/ finance, women empowerment, addressing violence among key populations, and management education.

He has completed his graduation in B.Sc. with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. He has completed his MBA from Karnataka University specializing in Marketing and Project Management.

Since April 1995, he is involved in the development sector. The involvement is in terms of managerial and technical support, project management - planning, coordinating, implementing & monitoring tasks, designing & conducting tailor made capacity building programmes, supportive supervision, monitoring and evaluation, community development and team building. Networking with Government, donor and other stake holders has been is greater part of this engagement.

He has worked in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Manoj Kumar Sharma: Deputy Director – Agriculture and Livelihood

Manoj Kumar SharmaA postgraduate in Environmental Science from G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, Manoj also holds a Management Diploma from International Agriculture Training Centre, Isreal in Water and Crop Production.

Manoj comes to us with over seventeen years of vast experience working with wide range of reputed industries, academic/research institutions, international organizations, NGO's and government agencies. He has extensive experience in program planning and management, implementation, monitoring & evaluation and human resource management. He is passionate about creating innovative and practical solutions for rural poor. He has to his credit the successful implementation of some of the innovative projects on groundwater management, rural drinking water and sanitation, agriculture and Livelihood.

He started his career at the grass root level as Assistant Officer Social Forestry and Horticulture in M/s Century Pulp and Paper. He then joined the prestigious Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation Project of World Bank, popularly known as Swajal Project as an Environmental Specialist. He went on further to join Disaster Risk Management Program of GOI and UNDP. His interest and expertise in water sector and rural livelihood motivated him to join North Gujarat Sustainable Groundwater Management Initiative Project of IWMI-TATA in the capacity of Team Leader. In a span of seven years he successfully led a pilot project into a full-fledged project later on to be converted into a nationally acclaimed award winning organization.

Before joining Swades, Manoj served as a Chief Executive Officer at Society for Integrated Land and Water Management.

Rajesh Machado - Program Associate, Water & Sanitation

Rajesh MachadoRajesh holds a PG Diploma in human rights from Indian Institute of Human Rights. He comes with over 11 years of experience across water & sanitation projects and is an expert in health and watershed programs, capacity building and providing technical Support to different stakeholders. Before joining Swades, Rajesh was working with Catholic Relief Services where he was in charge of watershed programs, providing linkages with different stakeholders & networking with Government, NGOs & Corporates.

Rajesh has also worked for emergency response programs for Bhuj earthquake, Tsunami in Tamil Nadu & Kerala, Maharashtra Floods and Andhra Pradesh Floods. He has also been rewarded with special recognitions for his dedicated services to the poor & the marginalized during Gujarat Earthquake Relief and for outstanding contribution to the CRS/India Tsunami response.
