Founded by Zarina & Ronnie Screwvala, Swades Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to transforming rural India through holistic development. Our efforts focus on critical pillars such as WASH and Climate, Education, Health & Nutrition, and Economic Development through Livelihoods. At the heart of our mission is the commitment to fostering community leadership and ownership, ensuring long-term empowerment and self-sustained growth for villages.

The Gyan Mitra initiative marks a significant milestone in our mission. It represents a transformative approach to reshaping education and community empowerment in India, integrating sustainability as its core principle. By equipping rural communities with tools, knowledge, and opportunities, the Gyan Mitra initiative builds pathways for lasting change.

How the Gyan Mitra Initiative works

The Gyan Mitra initiative identifies and nurtures local talent, aptly named Gyan Mitras, “knowledge friends” or “partners”, who are selected to go through training with seasoned mentors from the Community Empowerment Team, that will enable them to serve as effective trainers and leaders within their communities. These training sessions cover a diverse curriculum which includes agricultural practices, livestock management, health education, and environmental sustainability.

This initiative exemplifies Swades Foundation’s commitment to fostering community-led development by empowering Gyan Mitras to be catalysts of change. Their journey is not just about acquiring skills but about transforming communities through knowledge dissemination and leadership.

Empowering Communities Through Knowledge

At Swades Foundation, we believe that true empowerment begins with education, as the adage goes, “Knowledge is power.” The Gyan Mitra initiative exemplifies this belief by providing comprehensive training and certification programs that equip individuals to address critical community needs.

Gyan Mitras undergo specialised training in areas such as:

Goat Care and Management
Poultry Rearing
Financial Literacy
Plastic Waste Management
Health and Hygiene

These training modules empower them to serve as knowledge hubs, fostering a culture of learning and practical implementation within their communities. Participants gain essential skills like identifying unnecessary expenses, managing budgets effectively, and securing money in banks. They also receive practical guidance on generating income through livestock management and adopting sustainable financial practices.

To ensure their readiness, certified Gyan Mitras must conduct at least five independent training sessions, which are observed by Swades mentors. This process refines their skills and builds their confidence, enabling them to effectively share knowledge and create lasting impact in their communities.

Indraja Jangam: A Passionate Gyan Mitra

Indraja Jangam’s journey as a Gyan Mitra is driven by her passion for sharing knowledge and creating awareness. She enjoys interacting with people and making a meaningful difference in their lives. Her background in community mobilisation, coupled with her love for communication, made her decision to join Swades Foundation as a Gyan Mitra a natural choice.

Indraja’s previous work with the Panlot programme and the Swachh Bharat Mission – Phase 2 provided her with valuable skills in organising, training, and engaging with communities. It gave her the opportunity to conduct training sessions across five talukas, which further strengthened her expertise in these areas.

Indraja Jangam – Gyan Mitra

As a Gyan Mitra, Indraja has taken up the Waste Management module. Her efforts are focused on educating communities about:

Sorting Wet and Dry Waste: Teaching the community the importance of proper disposal methods to ensure it is easier to process, reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and prevents the spread of diseases and pests.
Compost Creation: Guiding villagers on building compost pits to transform wet waste into nutrient-rich manure.
Dry Waste Recycling: Educating on segregating materials like paper, metals, glass, and plastic, and connecting communities with organisations such as the Green Foundation for proper recycling.

Through these activities, Indraja aims to keep villages garbage-free and promote sustainable waste management practices.

Indraja’s long-term vision for the initiative is deeply rooted in sustainability. She believes that waste management is a lifetime commitment. “Until people fully understand the importance of proper waste management, we will continue sharing this knowledge,” she emphasised. Indraja also highlighted the importance of passing these practices on to the next generation. She pointed out that children learn by observing their parents and adopting responsible behaviour naturally. By fostering these habits, Indraja envisions a cleaner earth for future generations.

Celebrating Success: Gyan Mitra Certification

The journey of a Gyan Mitra is marked by dedication and achievement. Starting with 180 candidates across Raigad and Nashik, the initiative has certified 38 exceptional Gyan Mitras from Raigad in May 2024. This milestone was celebrated at the Sane Guruji Smarak event in Raigad, where these new Gyan Mitras were certified. The certification reflects months of intensive training, assessments, and practical experience, marking the beginning of their role as leaders ready to drive change in their communities.

Creating Sustainable Impact

The Gyan Mitra initiative embodies a long-term vision for community-led development:

Looking Ahead: Impact and Future Plans

Swades Foundation is committed to expanding the Gyan Mitra initiative to create a lasting impact. The first cohort of 76 Gyan Mitras from Raigad and Nashik was successfully certified in May 2024, marking a significant milestone. The second cohort, consisting of 49 Gyan Mitras, is scheduled for certification in February 2025.

By December 2025, the foundation aims to establish a robust network of Gyan Mitras across communities, ensuring sustained knowledge transfer, fostering self-reliance, and empowering communities through education and practical training.
